In order to effectively meet a community's digital preservation needs, it's important to find out just what those needs are. In 2019, researchers at Grand Valley State College received IMLS funding to conduct an assessment of digital preservation readiness at memory institutions across the state of Michigan. The Statewide & Regional Stepping Stones to the National Digital Platform project produced data and other deliverables that led directly to the creation of the Michigan Digital Preservation Network, which now provides cost-effective, accessible preservation services and a community of preservation practice to a wide range of Michigan's cultural heritage collections.
